If you are reading this, odds are that you find the current national motto “In God We Trust” irksome at best. Here at The Original Motto Project, our focus tends to be on government agencies using the phrase, whether it be on civic buildings or on emergency vehicles. While we encourage local dissent to those encroachments on the separation of church and state, there is one place the motto appears where we can all take action right now: paper currency.
“In God We Trust” appears on all US paper currency. Luckily for us it’s, well, paper, which means we can stamp out or cross out “In God We Trust.” We don’t need to fight with city councils or sheriffs to get rid of the offending motto – we can do it ourselves.
The Original Motto Project is organizing the Great Stamp Out. This will hopefully be a massive social media protest against the use of “In God We Trust” as our national motto. If you want to participate, please send us a short (25mb or less) video of you crossing out, stamping out, or otherwise removing “In God We Trust” from US Currency.
To cut people off at the pass: no, this is not illegal. It is legitimate political protest and protected by the 1st amendment so long as you do not destroy the bill (read our “get the facts on stamping” here). So please, no lighting money on fire or otherwise making the currency unable to be circulated. Videos that show illegal behavior will not be used.
How do I participate?
If you want to participate in the Great Stamp Out, send a picture or short video (25mb or less is preferred) to us via Facebook messenger (here) or email it to email@example.com. You do not need our stamp to participate. You can stamp out/erase/cover up “In God We Trust” however you see fit: an actual stamp, marker, crayon, etc. Feel free to be creative. The point is to erase “In God We Trust” in some way.
We will not use your name unless you want us to!
Deadline for submissions will be November 18th.
How can I get a stamp?
If you want to purchase one of our stamps, you can do so at http://originalmotto.us/bill-stamp/. However, any way you remove “In God We Trust” is fine with us (so long as it’s legitimate protest – see above). Again, You do not need our stamp to participate. Videos and pictures will be compiled into a montage and blasted across social media for all to see – maybe we’ll send it to a few theocrats as well.
Thanks and happy stamping!!
